Chapter Twelve

Leaking

Natalie’s sleep was hard and fitful, but it was dreamless for once. Her radio woke her the next morning like any other day. Except the radio DJ was on the verge of screaming.

“School has been canceled. The city asks that you keep your children calm and inside as we brace for day two of what some speculate may be the end of the world. Telephone repair crews have been working around the clock since last night to try to get a signal or a dial tone so we can alert the authorities to the strange happenings in our town. In related news, Police Officer Richard McHale tried to drive to Killington to get help and was… he was electrocuted by an invisible wall. There’s no word yet if he’ll survive.”

The force field, Natalie thought, with rising goose bumps covering her body.

“Let that be a word of warning, Meadowers. Don’t try to leave town. Something… something doesn’t want us to leave.”

Natalie was chilled by his words and gave her teddy bear, Mr. Teddily Winks, an extra hard squeeze. She turned off her radio and dressed. Once her perfect outfit of jeans and a v-neck shirt was complete, she left her room.

Ruth was still on her knees in Benjamin’s nursery. Dark circles framed her eyes, and she swayed as if on a rocking ship. Her eyes were vacant and her mouth was open with a crust of dried saliva on her lips. Natalie rushed to her side and went on her knees beside her. “Mom?” she whispered.

Ruth didn’t seem to hear her. She closed her eyes and wailed, “My baby, my baby.”

“I’m sorry, Mom. I promise I’ll find a way to fix it.” Natalie placed a hand on her shoulder, wishing she could help. When she did so, Ruth blinked several times and turned her head toward her daughter. “Mom,” Natalie called urgently.

“Natalie.” Ruth gulped down her tears. “I don’t want to see anymore.” She clamped her eyes closed tightly, but tears still flowed down her cheeks.

“It’ll be over soon.”

“How? How?”

Natalie shook her head. “I’ll figure something out.”

“Hurry then. Hurry,” Ruth whispered.

Natalie removed her hand from her mother’s shoulder, and as she did, Ruth turned her eyes back toward the empty child’s bed. The dead boy appeared again, and Ruth’s nightmare restarted as if someone had pushed play.

Natalie pursed her lips. She touched her mother again with great concentration, and the boy faded. Ruth was with Natalie in the present, looking at her daughter. Somehow, something about her could combat the dreams, but she couldn’t be everywhere at once. Natalie had to find a way to get rid of the Patricians; that was the only answer. But at least now she knew she could use something against them. It was as if her dream power neutralized theirs.

She didn’t know where to go or what to do, but if she was going to figure this out, she needed her friend—the one she could always count on. Natalie was afraid to see Tristan again, but she needed to.
